Questions & Responses
Do you have a budget for this initial Input Gathering and Concept Design?
$6890.00 is the amount from the Foundation grant.
Has a budget been established for the future implementation/construction project?
No. It depends on the design that is approved.
Where is this site? I would like to see the area prior to preparing our proposal.
It is a parking lot located on South Water Street East just off of Main Street in Fort Atkinson. Please see Google Map image here.
How will the future implementation project be funded (city budget/fundraising/grants/etc)?
Our expectation is that it will be funded by a combination of public funding, private donations, grants, and foundation funding.
Aside from the requirements listed in the RFP, is there a “type” of firm you’re hoping to work with (design-build/avante-guard/small boutique-design/local/etc)?
A committee will be reviewing the designs and the likelihood is that there are a variety of opinions about type of design that is most winning. There is agreement that increasing beauty, whimsy, and user enjoyment without unreasonably increasing an on-going maintenance burden for the City be a result.
For base materials, is there a survey of the existing conditions available for a design team to use at the beginning of design (September)?
There is no list of preferred materials. The committee will be open to the rationale offered by any designer for their choices. Designs that recognize that this area is an extension of the identity already established by our river walk, surrounding businesses, nearby library may receive extra favor. Those that can flexibly and practically accommodate the variety of uses the square is put to, will also likely meet with better success.
How rigid is your schedule and are there specific factors determining your schedule?
Arts Council volunteers can help organize some aspects of the input session to assist the designer and speed the input process. The timeline is driven by a desire to have a ballpark build-out figure to put before the city council during its November/December budgeting cycle, so while the deadlines themselves are not rigid, the basic time frame has parameters that are important.
Do you know of any historical preservation constraints to modifying the theater building/restrooms?
Not to our knowledge. There has already been significant redesign. We will check with historical preservation but we think not based on the alterations already done to the old theater building . The structure that remains house public bathrooms that are part of market square.
